New York and URTA Part 1

So.. I got back from my trip to New York on Monday and I have to say I had an unbelievable time! It was absolutely amazing and oh so fun!

The reason for going to New York was for a grad school program called "URTA." It's held in Chicago, San Fransisco, and New York and basically, students and professionals set up tables of their portfolios, examples of work, resumes, and things like that. Then, graduate schools and different theatre companies come in, puruse all the options and choose who they want to interview with. The rest of the day is set aside for having the interviews. Angie, one of my best friends, fellow costumer and fellow graduating senior, and I decided that it would be good for us to go to. That way we could interview with the schools we were interested in without having to plan 4-5 trips all over the US. This gets it out of the way in one swift swoop. URTA for New York was scheduled for Jan. 29th-30th. Angie and I both were placed in the slot for Sunday, Jan 30th.

Mom and I left Thursday, early early in the morning. It was interesting for me. The entire week, I had been staying up till about 2 in the morning working on my homework and getting my portfolio finalized and ready. That wednesday night I went to church, praying and agreeing that the Lord would guide me and His will be done for my schooling. I spent the rest of the night packing, finishing up, and trying to get ahead start on the homework I would be not doing while away. Needless to say, I was up for about 27 hours. I drove down to my parents house, did some last minute touch ups and then we went to the Airport. I slept the entire flight to New York. I was awake for take off and when we landed, that's about it.

New York is really really... really cold! Comparitavely to Texas of course. Upon arriving in the Big Apple we were greeted with "Welcome to New York ladies and gentleman. We hope you enjoyed your ride with us. Hope you enjoy your stay. The current temperature is 15..... " The rest of the speech was lost to me. 15? Did he say 15? He meant 50 right? Please tell me he meant 50! Thank goodness I had two jackets, a hat, a scarf, my gloves, and a sweater! Mom and I picked up our luggage and I began piling on as much clothes as I could as possible! I was so cold! I don't like the cold. This is why I live in Texas. **shivers just remembering it**

Mom and I got a shuttle and traveled to Manhatten. We met two very nice ladies, the younger girl was my age and her name was Anna Marie too! What a small world! lol. They were kewl and we chatted on the ride to the hotels. We got to the hotel and man was it posh! It was right in Time Square and right on Broadway! It was so nice! Mom and I put our things in our room and went to explore the city. I was so excited. The city was so big, busy, bright, and full of life! There were all kinds of people everywhere and so much going on. I had never seen so many stores, huge tv screens, flashy lights, and TAXIS! Right next to our hotel was this huge Hershey's store, MTV was right down the street, there was a three story Toys'r'Us with a full size ferris wheel, and lots of little souvenier shops. The first thing Mom and I did was find a place to eat. We hadn't eaten all day and we were so hungry. So we went to Bubba Gumps! hehehe. We'd eaten there before in New Orleans, but thought it would be nice to eat there again.

We weren't really sure what we were going to do that night. I really wanted to see a show. I know it's silly, but I wanted to make the most of my trip to New York. So we asked the lady there where we could get some cheap tickets or tickets at all. Near our hotel and in the center of Time Square was a little hut set up that sold half price tickets. After dinner, we went to the place and pondered at what to watch. We had to see it... it was perfect! We got tickets for Phantom!

Phantom of the Opera was my first Broadway musical ever to watch and it was so amazing. I hadn't seen the movie yet, and I'm glad I hadn't. I had gotten a lot of different reviews about it. I'm just very happy that I got to see it live and on Broadway. Did I mention how phenominal it was?! The costumes and music were amazing. The set was breathtaking and the special effects .... omg! Awesome! Totally Awesome! If you ever get the chance to see this Musical.. GO! GO I tell you! GO! It's totally worth it and so much more. We had balcony seats, but they were not bad at all! I could see everything really well and just ate the show up. There were some slow parts, but that happens in all shows. I loved it. Absolutely loved it! hehehe. To be Continued.....
