Choosing an Apartment
So I've been looking for an apartment for about... oh i don't know... Two years now. Not continuously of course. But I've been doing some shopping around, preparing for my move. My father said that if I spent the first three years of college at home, he'd get me an apartment my senior year. Well being my father's daughter I was trying to be frugil and looking for the best deal, The most room with the cheapest price! Of course, being my mother's daughter, I was looking for something classy and nice. I don't want to settle for just anything. Honestly, I could live in a $300 crapped out efficeincy. But I wouldn't have been happy. So using these two sides to my being I hunted for an apartment that was of decent size, moderately price, good quality, and all that jazz. Let me tell you.. there are A LOT of apartments in Denton. I looked at maybe 20ish.. and that doesn't even tip the iceburg of what is available. Most of these I did not even bother with because some have poor management, others are in bad condition, and a few weren't in the most ideal location. I was basing my decisions on what my mother wanted. She was most concerned for safety. She wanted a gate, maybe an alarm system, covered parking, and stuff like that. She also wanted me to have plenty of room so I could sew and take my drafting table with me. All are very reasonable expectations. I just had to make her aware that amenities such as those... were going to cost a pretty penny.
Right away they both liked the Courtyards. The courtyards are apartments owned by the school. They are very nice and come fully furnished, with a washer/dryer, provided easy access to a shuttle for school, and all bills paid (which includes cable t.v., phone line, and T1 Internet Access). Sounds great! However, they cost about $875, there wasn't much extra room left over with all that was provided, and I could not stand their computer desk. It was one of those with the drawers underneath so you only have enough leg room to actually get your legs in under the table. That just wasn't going to cut it.
Another place that I liked was a place that Liss and I had looked at, Windsor Village. These apartments are located perhaps one minute away from where Liss already lives. They are quite spacious and come at a great price. For a two bedroom apartment it was only $535 a month! I couldn't believe it. Most places by the school are like $525 for a single bedroom and they don't have nearly as much room. These apartments would be wonderful. I could get the two bedroom and have an extra room to make my sewing room. However, my dad did not like them because he feared because of my kind nature, I would get suckered into letting a friend stay over for a while and that person would eventually end up living there and he'd have to pay for it. My mother loved the how much room it had. Nonetheless, she was not at all pleased with the quality. Her exact words, "It's a dump."
Now the place that we all three could agree on was at The Fountains of Denton. This cute community of apartments is tucked away down McKinney in a small forest of trees. It's gated and very fancy. The one bedroom apartment was about 776 sq. ft. for a special low price of $680. Comparitavely for my father, the price was cheaper than those of the Courtyards. I think that is all my dad cared about. **shrug** Mom immediately approved. The apartments are quite cute and elegant. I liked them too of course and wouldn't mind living in them. There is a beautiful pool and volleyball court which the lady who was helping us mentioned that at least 10-12 guys occupy daily. (I think that's a hidden incentive.) hehehe.
I believe we have finalized our choice, which makes me more at ease. I'm happy with where I will be residing for the next year. However, it's not our first choice. The place that Mom and I absolutely fell in love with would not work. We both just absolutely could not resist CityParc apartments. They were absolutely gorgeous! They were similar to Courtyards with all bills paid and the same amenities. But, they were decorated in a kick ass Art Deco. The walls were painted all funky. The furniture was all black or wierd colors and the kitchen had all black appliances and dark counters. Oh man! I loved those apartments. They were just so awesome! Unfortunately, they did not hae an available one bedroom apartments and had a 15 person waiting list. Since they are a new complex, there is no way I would get an apartment in August.
But that's ok, I can just take their ideas and decorate my new apartment accordingly. In fact, I'm already getting started! About a week ago I discovered this great artist, Kandinsky. He was an abstract painter, kind of like Jackson Pollock. So I fell in love with one of his paintings, "Yellow, Red, and Blue." I just bought it today and plan to decorate around that. What's great about it is that a chair that my mother is letting me have goes perfectly with it. It has the same type of design and all the great colors. I'm thinking I'll paint the walls purple. Yeah.. that sounds good. My wood furniture like my dresser and t.v. stand I will refinish. I'm going to sand it all down and paint it black. I'll also replace the knobs and handles to pewter instead of gold. Oh I'm so excited. With the things I can't change, like my dinner table, I'll simply get a large black table cloth or something like that. hehehe.. I'm so excited! Yay apartment!
